Hi, I'm told this is something to do with the marriage of marie sophie (blanch?) lecat. I only have a copy of the document and it is very old, some of the words are missing. I also do not know much french so it is very difficult for me to make out much of it. This is what I've been able to make out so far.. I'm wondering if anybody who has a good knowledge of english would be able to translate it for me, and possibly fill in a few blanks.. I'm not sure all the letters are right as it's really difficult for me to make them out but any help would be greatly appreciated. sarah.

Hi Sarah,
I don't think it has anything to do with the marriage of Marie Sophie LECAT.
It looks like the death certificate of a Louis Hyppolite ?? LECAT husband of Eleonore BRIGUET, aged 52
who was born in Bazinghem, son of Hyppolite LECAT and Geneviève VASSEUR, both deceased.
That death has been recorded in Boulogne on 21st Januray 1877.
Hope this helps
Regards
Philippe From Sydney (Australia)

In the 10 years tables of Bazinghen (on line at the Archives of Pas de Calais),we can find the marriage LECAT x VASSEUR 15.2.1820, the birth of Louis Marie Hippolite LECAT 3.6.1820, the birth of Louis Hippolite Cleophas LECAT 21.3.1824.

Kind regards

Thank you so much everyone for your help, I am very grateful.

I have found some more information on the Lecat's in the census, but I am having a little difficulty reading understanding some of it. I would be very grateful to anyone who would be able to help with that.

Once again, thank you for all your help. Sarah.

it would be with great pleasure. Are these documents online somewhere ? Or maybe could you download them in our Gallery and let us help you to read and translate them ?

Are you talking about pictures from the archinoe site (online archives) ? If so, please note and paste here the reference of the pictures (town, year, page, etc) so we can easily find them.

Kind regards,
Vince

It would be really helpful if you could translate this for me, just a rough guide would do. Thank you very much.

Hi Sarah,

Citation (sevans @ 02/10/2011 à 09:09) *
as you can see by yourself, the link above is dead.
The reason is that it is linked (with a cookie I presume) to your own computer and limited to a short period of time. It is useless for anyone else than yourself, and for anybody including you after a couple of minutes. I think that the purpose is to avoid sites and bots to automate the consultation.

The only way to keep a track of the picture is by its references : town, year, page in the visualizer, just as I suggested in my message #7 above. Anyone who would like to look at the same picture has to go all through those references again. It is not possible just by an "http" link.

Have a nice sunday and read you soon,
Vince

M4005 Boulogne-Sur-Mer. - Recensement de population des sections 1, 2, 3, 4 et 5 : liste nominative. 1861
Page 1

I find I'm in need of the first page, I'm trying to understand the professions, and what the first 3 categories mean (the numbers before the names).. they are quite different to the English census I am so used to looking through. Also, is there any better way to search? I have been looking through the whole document for names, which is fairly easy when I'm looking at the census for Bazinghen, a mere 9 pages long, but Boulogne-Sur-Mer is about to 1000 pages long, I'm only 100 pages in!

Thanks for your help! Sarah.

Hi again Sarah,

the 3 numbers you are talking about are, in that order :
3. the # of the house
4. the # of the family in the house
5. the # of the individual in the family

The 2 first columns contain :
1. the district in the city/town
2. the street or place in the district

The professions are in the column #8. If one is difficult for you to understand, ask here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) .

Some words about the columns 9 to 14 : they qualify each person with a "1" in the appropriate column :
9. male
10. married (man)
11. widower (man)
12. female
13. married (woman)
14. widow (woman)

You are (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nickel.gif)

On the picture : "Elève pensionnaire" = student in a boarding school.
The 2 symbols below are a shortcut for "idem" : the 2 next persons are "Elève pensionnaire" too.

Would you please take a look at this for me? The top one looks like tailleur? But I can't make out the others.

You're right :
. "Tailleur" = tailor
. "La femme Repasseuse" = the wife ironer
. "Leur fils ??? travail" (assuming "pas de travail"...) = their son not working
. "idem idem" = all the same for the other son

You're very welcome,
Vince

Hi Sarah,

What new about your LECAT family ?

On the death certificate of Louis Hippolyte Cleophas LECAT in 1877, there was an interesting information: he lived 29 rue du pot d'étain (pewter pot st). I looked at the census of 1872, section 1 to 4, p 235, and found the family:
LECAT Louis, tailor, 48, born in Bazinghen
TRIQUET Eleonore, his wife, journeywoman, 48, born in Boulogne
LECAT Marie, daughter, ironer, 17
LECAT Adèle, daughter, seamstress, 15
LECAT Arthur, son, cooper's apprentice, 13
LECAT Octave, son, 12
LECAT Louise, daughter, 9
LECAT Rose, daughter, 7
LECAT Sophie, daughter, 4
All the children were born in Boulogne

The last child is probably Marie Sophie Blanche LECAT, born 14.4.1868, you were looking for.

Best regards
Pierre

This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you very much!
I can follow the Lecat's from 1820 through to 1878 in the census. I know Marie Sophie Blanche Lecat married an Englishman - Hugh Tannahill Meehan, but I don't know weather they married in France or England, and when they moved to England. It would have been some time between 1877 and 1894. I have no evidence that any of Marie's family also moved to England, so I am guessing it was some time after 1886. Do you have any records relating to this?

Thank you for all your help. Sarah.

Hi Sarah,

One thing is sure: the marriage MEEHAN x LECAT was not celebrated in Boulogne.

I have found a website where they speak of them:

http://home.cogeco.ca/~kmeehan/Meehan/f59.htm

The marriage is not indicated, but they had 2 children: Norah Elisabeth born 6.1.1894 and Gladwin Louis born 11.2.1896 in Erith (Dartford), Kent.
This is perhaps an interesting information for you.
Best regards
Pierre

Wow.. Thank you! I had not seen that website before. It has a lot of my family tree on it!
I will see if I can find a marriage for them in England. Thank you very much for your help.
