DE SAINT JEAN, SEGARD, BONTE, SELOSSE, Lille, Mouvaux, Halluin Options

Hello everyone my name is Sarah-Jane and I am from the UK and I am researching my family from France and surrounding areas. I do not speak French very well at all and I hope we can understand each other as I could really do with the help on my research and I may be able to help others as well. I hope I am doing this correctly..

I found your forum through dedicated research on Lille and its surrounding areas. My research has brought me to Mouvaux and recently a record from Le commune de catholic d'Halluin, from the Archives department.

I have been researching hard now for nearly three years and I have come to the C1600's. I do know it is getting harder and harder as the years go back and thoroughly checking and re-checking is so important now.

To try to give a basic idea of my research here is the following:-

My family of St John's always believed they were the noble St John's from the UK - but my research and talking to the family and finding interesting pointers, I followed the research and it brought me to Canterbury in Kent UK. where I brought the CD from the Huguenot Society in London and found the missing links to my family at the top of the tree. No one has got this far before, but on checking and re checking this is definately the family link. my 9th great Grand Father Nicaise (Nicholas) de Saint jean and his wife Marie (Mayre) Segard and one son Pierre De Saint Jean born 1630 Mouvaux, came to Canterbury sometime between 1633 -1638 from Mouvaux where they lived. I have found two other children baptised in Mouvaux, helene de saint jean born 1629 and Jaques de saint jean born 1633 but these two children never came to UK.

Nicaise and marie had two children in Canterbury madelainne de saint jean born 1638 Canterbury and abraham de saint jean born 1641 canterbury - there is possibly another son Jean de saint jean born 1639 canterbury still checking this one up.. Nicaise remarried in 1645 to Elizabeth Milvoye (MlLLEUOYE (MlLLENOYE) and in marriage cited the 'late Marie segard as the mother of three said children' and that was all.. I found a death in 1644 which is possibly Marie, but canterbury was not good at keeping death records..

Yesterday on searching the department archives I think I found a marriage in 1628 and something about Jaques de saint Jean but the writing is very very light and hard to read.

So this basically sums up where I am at the moment. I am looking for Nicaise De saint jean's family and marie segard's family in Mouvaux, Lille and any other interesting things about them and their families. I have linked to the family, BONTE, SELOSSE, DECOTTIGNIES, GODIN, MONNIER, MORTIER LEULEU, DELESTRIE, LEDOUX, LE SEDT, HAGNERE, VANDERSTEN amongst many others.

For anyone interested De Saint Jean became St John in and around the early C1700's in London as the youngsters grew and changed they became known via the english version of the name. They were artisans, grainers, silk weavers and weavers, Peter St John was a Master weaver - one 'St John' became a jeweller. The family moved to london in the late C1600's to Spitalfeilds and the surrounding area's and to this day they live in and around London or Canterbury.

I hope I have written this correctly as I am new to this forum as you can see I am a historical person and enjoy what I find out - I could go on forever it is so interesting.. to be able to track down Nicaise's and Marie's family, Mother, father, siblings where they possibly lived and worked would be such huge thing for me.

J'ai trouvé ce forum à travers une recherche sur Lille et ses environs. Ma recherche m'a amenée à Mouvaux et récemment à Halluin
Ça fait trois ans que je recherche et j'arrive maintenant aux années 1600 Ça devient de plus en plus dur au fur et à mesure que l'on avance en arrière

Ma famille SAINT JOHN a toujours pensé qu'ils étaient de la branche noble de SAINT JOHN du Royaume Uni mais mes recherches m'ont amené à Canterbury dans le Kent où à partir du CD de la Huguenot Society de Londres j'ai trouvé le chainon manquant en bout de branche. Personne n'était arrivé si loin encore mais en vérifiant et revérifiant il s'avère que c'est le bon lien.
Mon 9ème grand père Nicaise (Nicolas) de SAINT JEAN et son épouse Marie (Mayre) SEGARD et un fils Pierre de SAINT JEAN né en 1630 à Mouvaux sont arrivés à Canterbury entre 1633 et 1638 venant de Mouvaux.
J'ai trouvé 2 autres enfants baptisés à Mouvaux Helène née en 1629 et Jacques né en 1633 mais ceux-ci ne sont jamais venu au Royaume Uni

Nicaise et Marie eurent 2 enfants à Canterbury, Madelaine née en 1638 et Abraham né en 1641. Peut-être aussi Jean né en 1639 mais à vérifier.
Nicaise se remaria en 1645 avec Elisabeth MILVOYE MILLEUOYE MILLENOYE
Dans l'acte de mariage est citée défunte Marie SEGARD comme mère de 3 enfants
J'ai trouvé un décès en 1644 qui est peut-être celui de Marie mais les registres de décès de Canterbury sont mal conservés

Hier j'ai trouvé je pense sur le site des Archives Départementales un mariage en 1628 et quelque chose à propos de Jaques de SAINT JEAN mais l'écriture était très pâle et difficile à lire
Voilà où j'en sui pour le moment. Je recherche Nicaise de SAINT JEAN et Marie SEGARD à Mouvaux.

I have just seen this post, and yes I have worked with Christopher Yernaux and he has been exceptionally helpful to me.

Since all of these findings, I have found other members of the De Saint Jean family outside of Mouvaux and surrounding areas. I do believe that I may never find Nicaises baptism as so many records were destroyed. I would and am still trying to find his siblings.. I have found Michel LeClerqc's Family tree.. and to my amasement family on his tree are related to mine..

I now have to try to find records from Bauvry, Wasinques and other towns like this. Are there any existing records to be found fomr this area at C1600 or before? I know it was once Spanish Netherlands?

Hi Sarah-Jane. I’m a descendant of Corneille Sedt and Jeanne Boulin who came to Canterbury from the Lille area (via Antwerp) in about 1588. The Sedts were silk dyers and weavers. Their descendants also moved to Spitalfields. The name (le) Sedt was anglicised to Sack in the 1600s. What is your connection with the Sedt family? Kind regards, Philip Sack (Wiltshire)
