hello I am looking for information about my gt gt gt grandmother all I know is she was born 1798 there are two places of possible birth mentioned on Uk census Havre and St Omer . she married a soldier William Hinds/. Hines he was stationed in Northern France July 1816 to Sept 1818 and they than came to england? I don't know if De boer is the correct pronunciation as this seems to me not to be a French Surname? the story goes she was disowned by her family for marrying a Britsh soldier. Thankyou Peter Smith

Williams army record shows his second stay in France to be 1816 to March 1817 at Therouanne, April to June at St-Omer and then Valenciennes, then April 1818 at Blendecques and then Valenciennes again, and then returns to England. No army marriage record. Peter, I guess the UK have good military records going way back in time. At least you have one major piece of information -- there was no marriage information recorded in the military record, which would have been noted, as it requires the commanding officer's approval. If you can narrow down the city(ies) where Williams was stationed in the 12 to 18 months prior to the birth of his first child, that would give you a hot spot for your research. As far as Amelia/Emily DE BEER going to England, in the 1820s, for a single woman, either you were taken to England, or you went there as a maid - no many other options for a foreign woman. Best of luck figuring out this historical challenge. |
